The twin-engine PBY Catalina has always been very popular and was used, for example, by the U.S. Navy during World War II as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft, a transport and expedition aircraft, and a water bomber in maritime rescue operations. To this day, with over 3,000 units produced—about 1,400 of which were amphibious aircraft—the PBY Catalina remains the world’s most-built flying boat. The PBY Catalina model is painted in the U.S. Navy’s silver-gray color scheme and features a sturdy fiberglass fuselage as well as pre-covered wings and tail surfaces made of balsa wood, which reduces the assembly effort to a minimum so that this classic is ready to fly in no time. On the water, the PBY Catalina is easy to control and take off thanks to its water rudder. The hull’s shape, with its optimized step, allows for a gentle touch-down upon landing. For enjoyable flights, the PBY Catalina responds calmly yet directly to rudder inputs—exactly as you’d expect from a flying boat.
